Upper Linville Falls

Overview

Upper Linville Falls is the first dramatic drop of the Linville River, a modest but beautiful double cascade where calm water tightens into a chute and begins its plunge into the S‑shaped Linville Gorge. It’s the appetizer to the bigger lower falls—and a worthy stop on its own.

Getting There

Start from the Linville Falls Visitor Center area near Parkway MP 316.4. The Upper Falls Overlook sits about 0.5 miles in via a spur off the main trail network. Paths are well marked and generally moderate. Continue onward for bigger panoramas at Chimney View and Erwins View if you want the full tour.

Best Time to Visit

• Early morning or late afternoon: softer light on the water and fewer people.
• Weekdays beat weekends, especially in summer and peak fall color.
• After steady rain, flows are impressive—but expect slick rock and heavier spray.

Safety & Rules

This is a rugged gorge with real consequences. Stay behind the safety walls, keep kids close, and do not swim or scramble on the rocks—swift currents and steep drops have a history of accidents here.

Wildlife & Nature

Expect songbirds and woodpeckers along the trail, plus squirrels and deer; black bear sightings happen in the broader area. In season, wildflowers and rhododendron line the path, adding color to your hike.

Amenities
