Trail guide
This is a 1.0-mile round-trip out-and-back. Begin at the visitor center and follow the signed trail for about 0.2 mile to the fork; take the right fork to Plunge Basin Overlook. The physical corridor is about 0.49 mile one way, and this map stores that corridor once rather than duplicating the return walk. The separate left fork to the bottom of the falls is the Linville Gorge Trail and is not part of this experience.
The route passes through hemlock forest and other mixed hardwoods before reaching the overlook above Linville Falls. From the overlook, the lower falls and the Chimneys are the draw; the visitor center route also passes through the Linville Gorge landscape. The lower falls drop 45 feet, according to the National Park Service.
The National Park Service rates the Plunge Basin route strenuous. Expect steep grades, uneven rock, and steps, with a demanding climb back to the visitor center. Rock climbing and swimming in the Linville River are dangerous and not allowed. Park at the Linville Falls Visitor Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 316.4, and check current Parkway access before driving; restrooms and visitor information are seasonal.
