Rising to nearly 6,000 feet, Grandfather blends alpine-feeling ridges, sheer cliffs, and rare biodiversity. The Swinging Bridge delivers an exhilarating, all-abilities way to stand among the clouds. Down the slopes, the Linn Cove Viaduct clings to the mountain in one of the Parkway’s most photographed stretches.
From the Boone Fork parking area on the Parkway, the Daniel Boone Scout Trail climbs toward Calloway Peak, with options to link Nuwati and Cragway for extra scenery. The Tanawha Trail parallels the Parkway along the mountain’s mid‑elevations, perfect for creative loops or point‑to‑point days. Expect rugged terrain; some routes on the crest use ladders, cables, and exposed rock.
This is a biodiversity hotspot: bears, deer, bobcats, and 200+ bird species share space with rare plants found nowhere else in the Southeast. Guided hikes (seasonal, by reservation) spotlight the mountain’s ecology, history, and endangered species.
Crowds build quickly in summer and fall. The fee for the attraction area turns off some visitors, but it’s the easiest way to reach the Swinging Bridge and summit viewpoints.
