About Mahogany Rock Overlook

A small loop pullout at milepost 235, Mahogany Rock Overlook used to deliver sweeping vistas but today is best known as a low-key stop with a picnic table and a sky full of birds. If you’re chasing huge panoramas, this one’s no longer a headliner—but it shines in fall when raptors ride the thermals overhead.

This is an established raptor migration watch site. Each late summer through fall, birders gather to scan for kettles of broad‑winged hawks and other raptors funneling along the Blue Ridge.
