About Caudill Cabin

Deep in Doughton Park’s Basin Cove, Caudill Cabin is a time capsule of mountain pioneer life—far from roads, crowds, and anything modern. If you like history with your solitude, this is one of the Parkway’s most evocative places.

Built in the 1890s by the Caudill family, the cabin is one of the last remnants of a once‑busy Basin Cove community. A devastating 1916 flood destroyed most homesteads; this cabin survived and later became part of the park’s protected heritage. Unlike many historic structures, it still sits in its original wild setting, nearly 1,000 feet below the cliffs near Wildcat Rock Overlook.

Use Longbottom Road to reach the Basin Creek Trail parking for the hike.
Start early and budget a full day; the route is slow and remote.
Bring footwear that can handle many creek crossings and slick rocks.

Best time to visit

Go in dry weather when the creek is low—late summer into fall is ideal. Start early to give yourself a generous time cushion for the out‑and‑back. Weekdays see very light traffic. Avoid the route right after heavy rain when crossings can be unsafe.

Getting there & the hike

Most hikers reach it via Basin Creek Trail from Longbottom Road. Plan roughly 8.2 miles round trip. The route is primitive and lightly marked, with a reported 34 creek crossings. Expect wet feet in anything but the driest conditions. Navigation can be confusing at times—bring a map or GPS and allow plenty of time.
