Devils Garden Overlook

Overview

Perched at milepost 235.7, Devils Garden Overlook is one of those under-the-radar Parkway stops that rewards a quick pull-off. You get a distinctive V-shaped view dropping into the valley, with layered ridgelines and clear sightlines to Sugarloaf, Chestnut, and Rich mountains on good-visibility days.

Why it’s interesting

The overlook’s name is tied to local lore—some say the rugged, rocky terrain is so rough only the devil could cross it; others point to the rattlesnakes that shelter among the rocks and forest floor. Either way, the setting is dramatic, with the steep drainage of Garden Creek visible from the east side.

What you'll see

Expect sweeping Blue Ridge scenery framed by that natural "window"—a great spot for photos when the air is crisp. On clear days the distant summits line up beautifully for panoramas.

Trails from here

This stop doubles as a convenient jump-on point for the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. It’s a solid choice if you want to turn a scenic stop into a leg-stretcher or a longer day hike along this corridor; hikers often use it as a quiet access point for the MST and routes toward nearby Stone Mountain State Park.

Timber rattlesnakes are specifically noted here. Watch your footing near rocks and leaf litter, keep pets close, and give any snake ample space.

• Crowds: Generally quieter than marquee overlooks, but the small lot can fill on fall weekends.

Know before you go

There are no services—no restrooms, no water, no picnic tables—just parking, the viewpoint, and trail access. The approach signage on the Parkway may simply read "Overlook," so pin the milepost to avoid cruising past it.
