Set in rolling high-elevation meadows and woodlands near milepost 239–241, Doughton Park Campground is the Parkway’s classic rustic basecamp. It’s big (well over 100 sites), usually quieter than the marquee campgrounds, and drops you into a landscape of open balds, old farmsteads, and long views.

This is one of the Parkway’s largest recreation areas, stitched together by 30+ miles of trails. From the campground, paths fan out across meadows and forest to places like Brinegar Cabin—an authentic late‑19th‑century homestead—and along Bluff Mountain’s open ridges. Wildflowers (flame azalea, rhododendron) pop in late spring, and you’ll share the meadows with white‑tailed deer and abundant birdlife. Keep your eyes peeled at dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active.
Doughton Park blends scenery, solitude, and culture better than most Parkway campgrounds. You get big‑sky meadows, genuine Appalachian history, and a trail system that can fill a long weekend—without the crowds that swarm the Parkway’s busiest hubs.
