Bluff Mountain Trail is a 7.5-mile, point-to-point ridge walk through Doughton Park, paralleling the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s a moderate hike with a relatively gentle grade, mixing open meadows and mixed hardwood forest for frequent long-range views without punishing climbs. You can start from multiple access points, notably Brinegar Cabin and Basin Cove Overlook, and hike any segment as an out-and-back or set up a shuttle to cover the full one-way distance.

Expect a natural surface of dirt with some rocky stretches. Portions along the ridge open to the wind and sun; forested segments offer shade and calmer conditions. The payoff is classic Parkway scenery—rolling ridgelines, broad valleys, and seasonal color changes that keep the experience fresh across the year.

If you want to turn this into a big day, strong hikers sometimes link Bluff Mountain with Flat Rock Ridge and Cedar Ridge for a long loop (reported around 16.6 miles). That’s a commitment, but it strings together more ridge time and adds variety.

Best time to hike: Spring through early summer brings lush wildflowers and rhododendron along the corridor, while fall lights up the ridges with brilliant foliage and crisp, far-reaching views. Summer is pleasant up high thanks to cooler ridge temps, but start early for softer light and fewer people. Winter offers solitude and exceptional visibility, but it can be windy and cold on the ridge—bring layers.

Practical notes: This is a hiking-only trail. Trailheads at Brinegar Cabin offer parking and seasonal restrooms; there are no facilities once you’re on trail. There are typically no fees or permits required for day hiking, and dogs are allowed on leash. Start early during peak wildflower and foliage seasons to find parking and space on the trail.

Tips: Plan your mileage. The full trail is 7.5 miles one way; for a shorter day, bite off a favorite section from any access point. Pack a wind layer even on mild days—the ridge can funnel gusts. Footing can be uneven and, in places, eroded; sturdy shoes and optional trekking poles help. Water is scarce on the ridge, so carry what you need.

Pros

  • Multiple access points let you tailor distance and shuttle easily
  • Gentle grades deliver big views without relentless climbing

Cons

  • Ridgetop exposure can be windy and cold, especially in winter
  • Some sections show wear and erosion, making footing uneven

Parking

Park at Brinegar Cabin trailhead (parking and seasonal restrooms when open) or at Basin Cove Overlook; additional access points along the Parkway allow segment hikes or a shuttle.

Caution

Windy, exposed ridge sections; uneven and eroded tread in spots; limited water on the ridge; weather changes quickly—carry layers and sufficient water.
