Hiking Devils Kitchen to Elephant Canyon Trail

What this route isThis is a 5.

This is a 5.2-mile one-way through-hike from Devils Kitchen trail access to Elephant Hill Trailhead, crossing a line of red sandstone needles and passing through Elephant Canyon. It ends at Elephant Hill, not in the canyon, so plan the return before you start: you'll need a shuttle or a second vehicle. I'd choose it for a remote traverse with changing terrain, not for a simple day walk from one parking lot.

Access takes planningThe Devils Kitchen access is reached on the Needles backcountry road system.

The Devils Kitchen access is reached on the Needles backcountry road system. NPS requires high-clearance, low-range 4WD on these roads and a day-use permit for single-day trips on Elephant Hill roads. The hike itself is point to point, and no dedicated shuttle was verified. Allow about 3 to 4 hours on foot; the road approach and vehicle handoff are extra. Dogs aren't allowed on Canyonlands hiking trails or in the backcountry.

The walk starts along a broad sandy wash, then leaves it for the south side of a narrowing canyon. A rocky climb brings you over reddish sandstone fins into a basin. Around 0.8 mile, the route bends around the needles and then runs south beside them for a long stretch. This is mostly open country; the fins make a strong backdrop, but shade is limited.

Elephant Canyon crossingAt the junction for Chesler Park, keep left on the through-route.

At the junction for Chesler Park, keep left on the through-route. It drops into Elephant Canyon's wide sandy wash, crosses it, then climbs the other side to a narrow, shaded slot. The contrast is the payoff: after the exposed sandstone, the slot feels cool and enclosed. The path turns right into a grassy prairie framed by needles, crosses another smaller fin group around mile 3.8, and brings Elephant Hill into view.

Finish at Elephant HillBeyond the last small rocks, the plateau opens up.

Beyond the last small rocks, the plateau opens up. Follow the cairned path as it leaves Elephant Hill on your left and descends to the Elephant Hill parking area. The district's sandstone trails mix sandy washes with slickrock, and cairns and junction signs can be easy to miss in open terrain. NPS says water sources on Needles trails are unreliable; carry what you'll need and bring a topographic map rather than relying on cairns alone.
