Overview

About Lock 29

Why stop

  • Walk inside a surviving stone lock and see its masonry up close.

Heads up

  • The popular shared access point can have parking pressure.
The lock curved at both ends, and a wooden aqueduct carried the canal across the Cuyahoga River beside it. Together they narrowed boat traffic into a difficult passage. The aqueduct leaked as its wood expanded in winter freezes, sometimes leaving cascades of icicles; summer leaks made it harder to keep the canal at the right level. Its position beside the river also put the works at risk of flooding.

More about Lock 29

A lock you can walk intoLock 29 is a surviving stone lock on the Ohio & Erie Canal in Peninsula, beside the Cuyahoga…

Lock 29 is a surviving stone lock on the Ohio & Erie Canal in Peninsula, beside the Cuyahoga River and Towpath Trail. It is a compact history stop: follow the short path from the trailhead into the dry chamber, then read how this bend in the canal held up boat traffic.

Find the lock and make the stop workStart at Lock 29 Trailhead on Mill Street and follow the kiosk path toward the Towpath.

Start at Lock 29 Trailhead on Mill Street and follow the kiosk path toward the Towpath. A footbridge crosses one end of the chamber, and another interpretive panel sits above it, reached by stairs or trail. This is a popular shared access point, so parking can fill. The Towpath continues north toward Lock 30 and south toward Lock 28 and Deep Lock.

The adjacent trailhead is listed with accessible flush restrooms and drinking water. Visitor reports differ on finding the restroom, so check before relying on it; those facilities are at the trailhead, not inside the lock.

Look closely at the stoneworkThe large sandstone blocks were quarried nearby at Deep Lock.

The large sandstone blocks were quarried nearby at Deep Lock. When the canal was refurbished in 1905, many locks received concrete facings, but Lock 29 was among the few spared because it had already been repaired. Walk into the dry chamber to see the masonry up close, then look back from the upper panel to understand how it fits into the canal landscape.

Peninsula and the canal tradePeninsula grew into a service and boatbuilding stop along the canal.

Peninsula grew into a service and boatbuilding stop along the canal. Its upper-level exhibit compares a bird's-eye view dated 1882–1902 with village buildings that still stand, and explains the businesses that served canal crews. Roughly half the boats on this canal were built in Peninsula or Boston, the next village north.

For a photo, stand on the footbridge and angle down the chamber so the opposing stone walls show its narrow shape. The bridge and lock walls make the old water route legible in one frame.
