Overview

This is an easy, family‑friendly loop of about 2.8 miles total with roughly 80–150 feet of gentle elevation change. It winds through a mix of hardwood forest, tall evergreens, and open fields from a former Christmas tree farm, starting and ending by Horseshoe Pond. Expect a mellow walk that typically takes 1–1.5 hours. Dogs are allowed on leash. The surface is mostly dirt and grass, and it’s not wheelchair accessible.

Highlights include a long corridor of towering pines, views over the old tree farm fields, and a peaceful stop at Horseshoe Pond. In warm months, the open sections can pop with wildflowers. Wildlife is common here—think deer browsing at forest edges, squirrels and rabbits darting across the path, and birds working the pond margins (herons are regulars).

Conditions and Tips

The big variable is mud. Grassy and dirt stretches get sloppy after rain and can stay muddy for weeks—waterproof boots are your friend. In summer, apply bug/tick spray; some portions have foot‑high grass that holds moisture and ticks. Signage near the trailhead can feel sparse, so pay attention at the start. Restrooms by the lot may be closed seasonally, and there’s no water—bring your own. The park has been improving drainage in places, but you should still expect soft, wet spots after storms.

Best Time to Hike

Year‑round is fair game. Aim for several dry, warm days after rain if you want clean shoes. Sunrise light over Horseshoe Pond is lovely, and weekdays or early mornings keep things quieter (the small lot can fill on fair‑weather weekends). In winter, it doubles as a scenic cross‑country ski loop; if you’re hiking instead, bring traction for icy patches and stay out of ski tracks.

Should You Do It?

If you want a low‑effort, varied walk—pond, pines, meadows—in under three miles, this is a solid pick. It’s not dramatic or rugged, but it’s relaxing and photogenic. If you’re chasing bigger views or rockier terrain, pair it with a nearby loop like the Ledges or add a quick lap at Kendall Lake.

Getting There

Park at the Horseshoe Pond lot on Major Road (south of Peninsula off Riverview Road). From the lot, the loop heads into gently rolling woods and returns to the pond. Expect a straightforward circuit once you’re on it.
