Getting there

Start at Botzum Trailhead on Riverview Road, then walk north on the Towpath toward Beaver Marsh; the lock is not a drive-up stop. The Towpath is shared by walkers, runners and cyclists. The trailhead has two ADA-standard pit toilets with grab bars and no drinking water; those facilities are at Botzum, not at the lock. The site is listed as wheelchair accessible, though the directions still start with a walk from the trailhead.

Lock 25 is a small remnant of the Ohio & Erie Canal: one crumbling stone lock wall beside the Towpath. It is a worthwhile detour if old transportation history interests you, but there is no restored lock chamber to tour.

The Ohio & Erie Canal was built from 1825 to 1832, linking the Ohio River at Portsmouth with Lake Erie at Cleveland. Mule teams followed the Towpath as canal boats carried goods and passengers. Nearby Botzum Farm was part of that working landscape, with a canal boat, a sawmill and a general store.
