Cow Bay Beach

Cow Bay Beach is a long tropical beach at the end of Buchanan Creek Road in Daintree National Park’s Cow Bay area. Rainforest backs the sand, and a rocky headland marks its northern end. It suits a walk or picnic more than a swim: crocodiles may inhabit coastal waters, and marine stingers can occur year-round, more often in warmer months. Don’t swim here.

A stroll along the broad shore is the simple option. Walk north to the rocks; at low tide, you can go around the headland to more isolated coves. Check a tide table before planning that extra walk. For a photo, include the north-end rocks in the foreground with the rainforest-backed coast behind them.

From Cape Tribulation Road, turn onto Buchanan Creek Road and follow it about 6 km to the beach. There’s a car park with picnic tables and a public toilet. There’s no café or shop at the beach; Floravilla Ice Creamery is a separate stop in the wider Cow Bay area. Mobile reception is patchy, so have your directions and tide times ready before you leave service.

The earlier settlement in the area was called Bailey’s Creek. The later name Cow Bay has no settled origin story: one account links it to cattle left around the early settlement, while another suggests dugongs (sea cows) feeding on coastal seagrass. Treat both as local explanations, not confirmed history.
