Getting there, and staying out of the water

From the Daintree ferry, drive about 35 km along Cape Tribulation Road; the signposted car park is 7 km past Noah Beach camping area. The road is narrow and winding. Conventional 2WD vehicles can reach Cape Tribulation, but higher clearance helps and caravans aren't recommended. Parking can be busy when tour groups arrive, though visitor reports vary from plenty of spaces to a difficult search.

Treat the sea as scenery, not a swimming recommendation. Crocodiles may inhabit coastal waters, and dangerous marine stingers can be present at any time, more often in warmer months. Follow local warning signs and check road conditions before setting out.

Cape Tribulation Beach is a long sandy shore beneath rainforest-covered slopes, with rocky headlands along the Coral Sea. Kulki day-use area is the signed access just behind the beach. I’d keep this as a coastal scenery stop: the short boardwalk gives you the elevated view, and the beach is where you can linger.

The Grade 1 Kulki boardwalk is 600 m return, about 10 minutes on foot, ending at a constructed ocean lookout. You can continue to the beach from the day-use area. There are shaded picnic tables, some sheltered, and flush toilets. Wheelchair access is provided, though assistance may be needed. No food service or drinking-water point is listed at Kulki, so don't count on either being available.

The lookout brings the long beach, rocky headlands and steep rainforest slopes into one frame. That's the strongest photo here; the elevated view is a short walk from the car park. From the sand, turn back toward the forested coastal range for a lower shoreline view.

Captain James Cook named Cape Tribulation in 1770 after the Endeavour struck a nearby reef. He wrote that their troubles began there, giving the cape a name that stuck long after the voyage.

The park lists Bennett's tree-kangaroos, cassowaries, buff-breasted paradise kingfishers and pied imperial-pigeons among the wildlife to look for in the rainforest. Summer is the season for migrating pied imperial-pigeons; humpback whales migrate offshore in winter. Dugongs, turtles and dolphins may also be seen at sea, but none of these sightings is guaranteed.

This stretch of coast sits where the Wet Tropics rainforest and Great Barrier Reef World Heritage areas meet, with rainforest running down to the shore and reef offshore. The Wet Tropics was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1988; the Daintree was also at the centre of a major conservation campaign during the 1980s.
