Mount Alexandra Lookout (Walu Wugirriga)

The panorama runs from rainforest and coastal lowlands out over the Daintree River mouth and the Great Barrier Reef. Pick out Snapper Island and Low Isles offshore; on a clear day, the coastline can extend toward Port Douglas and Double Island.

Look into the trees for a flash of blue from a Ulysses butterfly. Then look up over the water: Pied Imperial Pigeons fly between the mainland and Low Isles, adding movement to the broad view.

Walu Wugirriga is the local name associated with Mount Alexandra and is usually translated as “look about.” The lookout is on Eastern Kuku Yalanji country, and the name suits a place built for taking in the wider landscape.

Keep some rainforest canopy in the foreground, with the river mouth and islands beyond it. That gives the image a sense of how the view moves from dense tropical forest to open coast. On a clear day, see if you can pick out the Low Isles lighthouse.

Take the signposted pull-off on Cape Tribulation Road north of the Daintree River ferry crossing. The road is narrow and winding, though conventional vehicles can travel this section. The car park is wheelchair accessible; access to the lookout may require assistance. This is a quick panorama stop rather than a walk, so it’s easy to fit into a drive north.
