“The Daintree River ferry crossing is coming up. The ride takes about five minutes, but allow extra time to queue, pay and load. A steel cable stretches between the banks, and an onboard winch hauls the ferry across.”

Solar Whisper runs guided crocodile and wildlife trips on the Daintree River, leaving from the south bank near the car ferry. It’s a roofed, open-sided solar-electric boat, and you stay aboard throughout. The one-hour trip is the quick look; a two-hour version gives photographers and patient wildlife-watchers more time, with space for up to 10 passengers. Guides use communal binoculars, nicknamed the Croc Cam, to point out animals tucked into the banks.

Go for the river, not a guaranteeThis is a search through wild habitat, not a staged crocodile show.

This is a search through wild habitat, not a staged crocodile show. Saltwater crocodiles, birds, snakes, frogs, bats, crabs and fish live along the river, but sightings vary from trip to trip. Lower tides expose more sandbank, and cooler conditions can help; hot weather at summer high tide is the hardest time to spot crocodiles. A quiet boat and a good guide improve your chances, but wildlife is never promised. The two-hour trip is better for patient observers than very young children.

The office is on the south side of the Daintree ferry, at 315 Cape Tribulation Road. If you’re already on the north bank, you can leave the car there, cross as a foot passenger and walk about 400 metres to the office. Book ahead if your timing matters: walk-ups sometimes get on, but some days are busy.

There’s a covered waiting area with books, cards and toys, plus complimentary cold water, tea, coffee and biscuits. Toilets are in the amenities block beside the office; there are none on the boat. It has a roof but no windows, so a raincoat is useful when showers are about.

Mangroves, rainforest and Thornton PeakThe cruise follows mangrove habitat along the river toward the reef.

The cruise follows mangrove habitat along the river toward the reef. Across the water, rainforest and Thornton Peak make a striking backdrop. The guide may spot crocodiles or smaller wildlife hidden among the banks, but careful scanning is part of the experience: well-camouflaged animals are easy to miss.
