Parking

Use the East Rim Mixed-Use Trailhead main parking area, about one mile south of the Entrance Station. The 6.5-mile route starts here. A secondary access is on the north side of the Visitor Center parking lot, but that makes a longer walk. A per-vehicle day-use fee is required.

Safety

The far east rim is remote, cell reception is spotty and basic route-finding skills are required. The narrow dirt and slickrock singletrack is shared with mountain bikes. Dogs must be on leash at all times.

“You're approaching the Intrepid trailhead, the access for a longer outing to the Cable Line hoist. Its rusted tripod and pulley helped oil workers lift equipment from the river in the early nineteen fifties.”

Hiking Lower Dark Horse Trail

The full walkLower Dark Horse is a 6.

Lower Dark Horse is a 6.5-mile out-and-back from the East Rim Mixed-Use Trailhead, with about four hours for the approach, both viewpoint branches and the return. This is a substantial east-rim walk rather than a short stop at an overlook. The distance includes the named approach trails from the main parking area and the retraced path to visit both Lower Dark Horse viewpoints.

From the main lot, follow the Parking Connector to Raven Roll, then Great Pyramid, Big Chief, Miner's Point, Upper Dark Horse and Cable Line. Lower Dark Horse branches from Cable Line. The route reaches the fork after roughly 0.9 mile of Lower Dark Horse singletrack; the two viewpoints are short dead-end spurs, so you retrace each and then retrace the shared approach to the lot. The 1.1–1.2-mile figures attached to Lower Dark Horse describe its named singletrack network, not this full hike from parking.

The western spur looks into a broad canyon and exposes the Kayenta, Wingate, Chinle and Moenkopi rock layers. The eastern spur crosses rougher sandstone to a view over the blue potash ponds and Colorado River, with Navajo Sandstone and the La Sal Mountains farther out. At the fork, the west spur is about 0.1 mile each way and the east about 0.2 mile each way; if you have time for only one, the eastern view has the more varied foreground and distant backdrop.

Expect narrow, twisty singletrack that alternates between rolling sandstone and dirt, with branches and occasional rock underfoot. Hikers share these routes with mountain bikes. The far east rim is remote, so basic route-finding skills matter and cell reception is spotty; use the maps posted at junctions rather than relying on phone service alone. Dogs are allowed on the mixed-use trails but must stay leashed at all times.
