Overview

Red Cathedral caps Golden Canyon with striking, red fluted walls that glow against the surrounding golden badlands. It’s a classic outing that delivers big scenery for modest effort, and it feels different from the park’s drive-up viewpoints because you earn the view through a beautiful canyon approach. The National Park Service even calls the trip up Golden Canyon to Red Cathedral a park classic.

Route & Difficulty

Start at the signed Golden Canyon Trailhead on Badwater Road. The first mile is an easy walk through yellow mudstones and side slots. Pass the signed Gower Gulch junction, continue as the canyon narrows, then finish with a brief hands-on scramble through tight passages to reach the base of Red Cathedral. Expect roughly 2.5–3 miles round-trip with moderate elevation gain; the final stretch is the crux.

What You’ll See

• Golden Canyon’s warm yellow walls and occasional side slot canyons along the way.
• The deep red, fluted face of Red Cathedral forming a natural amphitheater at the head of the canyon.
• Big views back down Golden Canyon and across the badlands, with Manly Beacon visible near the junctions.

Best Time to Visit

Light is most flattering early and late in the day when the red walls glow and shadows add depth. Midday tends to be busier, especially in cooler months, while early mornings are quieter and far cooler. Weekends and holidays see more hikers; midweek mornings are your best bet for space and calm.

Logistics you’ll care about

• Trailhead: Golden Canyon Trailhead on Badwater Road (south of Furnace Creek).
• Facilities: Vault toilets at the trailhead; no water available. There are no amenities at Red Cathedral itself.
• Parking: The trailhead lot is limited (about 14 car spaces plus a few for RVs/buses); arrive early on busy days.
• Dogs: Not allowed on this trail.
• Heat: There is no shade—carry plenty of water, sun protection, and pace yourself.

Extend your day

If you want more, continue beyond the Red Cathedral junction across colorful badlands to Zabriskie Point and loop back down Gower Gulch for a fuller circuit of the area’s sculpted terrain.

Wildlife

This is harsh, open desert. Sightings are sparse—think small lizards and occasional birds. The real show here is the geology, color, and texture of the badlands.
