Desolation Canyon Trail

From the open gravel parking area, avoid the small drainage to the south and begin east toward the Black Mountains. Round the corner, turn south while hugging the mountains on the left, and follow the main wash uphill. About one mile into the main canyon, two dryfalls—approximately 8 feet and then 6 feet—require careful scrambling. Continue through the next canyon intersections, keeping right, then follow the gradual route to the ridgeline for broad views over Death Valley and Artist's Drive below. Return by the same route. The stored line follows the physical corridor once; the listed distance is the full out-and-back walking distance.

Desolation Canyon Road leaves Badwater Road 3.7 miles south of CA-190 and is typically passable to sedans when dry. The route is in designated wilderness, has no signs or formal trail, and can be confusing among the drainages; carry a map and compass. There is no restroom at the trailhead. Expect full sun, no water, and extreme heat; avoid summer midday and never enter during rain or when the ground is saturated because of flash-flood danger. Climbing back down the dryfalls is harder than climbing up, so use caution and do not hike beyond your ability.
