Overview

About Cwmorthin Slate Quarry

Why stop

  • Rare mix of slate ruins, lake, and mountain scenery

Heads up

  • Steep, slippery approach with unstable quarry edges
Cwmorthin is a disused slate quarry in a high, enclosed valley west of Tanygrisiau. The worthwhile part is above ground: weathered slate buildings, spoil heaps, old tracks, running water and Llyn Cwmorthin, all packed into a landscape that feels both rugged and strangely quiet. It is a much more rewarding stop for people who enjoy industrial history and wild scenery than for anyone expecting a polished attraction.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Wear sturdy footwear and bring waterproofs, a warm layer, water and an offline map. Wet slate is slippery, the ground around the workings is rough, and the ruins, shafts and adits can be unstable. Do not enter mine workings or climb on structures. Stay on obvious open paths, respect gates and private land, and treat the lake and quarry edges with care. A dry, clear day gives the best footing and mountain views; early morning or late afternoon usually brings softer light across the slate and a better chance of having the valley to yourself.

Getting there

The usual start is the small car park at the end of Cwmorthin Road, reached from Tanygrisiau near the Ffestiniog Power Station. From the gate, the path rises steeply on loose, uneven slate. It is a short approach to the lake, but exploring both sides and the quarry ruins turns it into a several-hour walk. The little car park fills quickly, especially on weekends, so an early or weekday start is the least frustrating option. Do not rely on facilities or refreshments at the quarry.

More about Cwmorthin Slate Quarry

What you will seeThe approach climbs beside a series of waterfalls before reaching the lake and the quarry…

The approach climbs beside a series of waterfalls before reaching the lake and the quarry remains. Look for the old terraces, ruined workers' buildings, the chapel ruins and traces of the mills, water systems and tramways that once moved slate out toward the Ffestiniog Railway. The upper valley opens into broad views of bare, weathered rock and grassy mountain slopes. A longer outing can continue toward the remains of Rhosydd Quarry, but the Cwmorthin lake and lower quarry already make a satisfying visit.
