Trail guide
A short waymarked loop of 1 mile (1.6 km) total, usually taking about an hour. From the small parking area you walk roughly 100 metres along the road to a reserve sign and a public footpath sign, cross a field, then pick up the waymarked path into ancient oak woodland. The route drops down to Rhaeadr Ddu waterfall before climbing back and completing the loop at the car park.
It is officially graded strenuous despite the short distance. The path down to the waterfall is steep, with uneven steps and uneven ground underfoot. The gorge is a narrow ravine with high cliffs, so stay on the waymarked route. There is no mobile reception in the gorge.
After rain the river can become a dangerous torrent. Keep well away from the water and do not attempt to get closer to the falls for a photo.
This is a damp, sheltered oakwood, thick with lichens, mosses and liverworts, and the waterfall and ravine are the payoff. Woodland birds recorded here on a seasonal basis include redstart, wood warbler and pied flycatcher.
Parking is a small area at the start of the walk (grid reference SH 6641 3928). It is not run by the reserve, has an honesty box, and can fill up when outdoor activity groups are visiting.
Dogs are welcome on the public footpaths under close control, and should be on a short lead near livestock and wildlife.
