Heads up
- Very basic facilities and no on-site supplies

The holding covers around 4,000 acres and carries National Nature Reserve, Special Area of Conservation and SSSI designations. Human use of the valley reaches back to at least the 12th century, and the Victorian slate and copper workings have left inclines and workers huts scattered through the higher ground, which give the walk up plenty to look at beyond the summit itself.

Nothing is guaranteed, but the valley is home to Welsh Black cattle, Welsh mountain sheep and feral goats, with choughs and peregrines overhead and cuckoo and pied flycatchers among the smaller birds. In spring, look for primroses and bluebells. Sightings are luck, not a feature: bring binoculars and low expectations, and enjoy anything that turns up.
