Parking

Start and finish at the small National Park car park in Croesor village, near grid reference SH 631446. Spaces are limited. Use designated spaces only and never block homes, driveways or field entrances.

Best time to go

Cnicht presents a pointed profile from the valley, and the ridge gives broad views over surrounding Eryri summits and out toward the coast, with mountain lakes and old slate workings below. Cwm Croesor is glacially shaped and the whole area carries a strong slate-mining history. Clear weather is what makes this walk worth the effort, since both the summit and the ridge traverse depend on visibility. Start early to have the ridge in quieter conditions, and early or late light suits the valley and slate landscape.

Safety

Sustained mountain ascent, short rocky hands-on section, loose rock, wet and boggy high ground, fast-changing weather, and faint navigation after the summit. Carry a map and compass or offline map.

Hiking Cnicht from Croesor

The route in shortA circular loop of 8.7 km / 5.

A circular loop of 8.7 km / 5.4 miles from Croesor village up to the summit of Cnicht (689 m), with roughly 620 m of ascent. Allow 3 to 4 hours with stops. It is a hard mountain day hike, 7/10, mostly because the climb is sustained and the return crosses rough, faint ground.

How the walk unfoldsLeave the car park and follow the lane and track climbing north-west out of Croesor.
  • Leave the car park and follow the lane and track climbing north-west out of Croesor.
  • Waymarks and a well worn path lead onto the mountain and up the customary line toward the summit.
  • The final approach steepens onto rock and may need hands on for a few short moves, though it is brief rather than a long exposed scramble.
  • From the rocky summit point continue north-east along the high ridge, then turn toward Llyn y Biswail.
  • Descend across open mountain ground toward the Llyn Cwm-y-foel side of the valley, where a clearer path and track return you through Cwm Croesor to the village.
Footing and navigationThe start is tarmac and stony track.

The start is tarmac and stony track. Above that expect grass, rock and boggy patches, with a rocky finish to the summit. Navigation becomes the main challenge after the summit. The high-level line toward Llyn y Biswail and the descent to the valley can be indistinct and wet, so carry a map and compass or an offline map and know how to use them in cloud. Sturdy boots with ankle support and grip make the descent far easier.

  • Carry your own water and food, and do not rely on mountain facilities or shelter along the route.
  • Mountain weather can change quickly, with cold wind and low cloud on the ridge even when the valley is calm.
  • Wet ground, slippery rock and loose stones are constant on the higher and rougher sections.
  • Pack windproof and waterproof layers, and consider turning back from the summit rock if conditions feel beyond your comfort.
If this sounds like too muchThere is a shorter lower-level circular walk from the same village, around 5.

There is a shorter lower-level circular walk from the same village, around 5.5 km and about 3 hours, which stays in the valley and gives you the slate and glacial scenery without the summit climb or the navigation demands.
