Overview
About Llyn Gwynant
Why stop
- Mountain reflections and close views of Yr Wyddfa
- Easy to pair with a swim or short lakeside wander
Heads up
- Small parking areas fill quickly in good weather
- Cold open water and changeable mountain conditions
Llyn Gwynant is a long, narrow mountain lake in Nant Gwynant, one of Eryri’s best low-effort landscape stops. The water sits beneath Yr Wyddfa and the surrounding hills, with a particularly good reflection view when the surface is still. It feels less like a formal attraction than a piece of the valley you can step into: pull over at a marked layby, walk to the shore, and let the mountain backdrop do the work.

Wild swimming and water sports are popular here, and the lake is also a good place for a short shore wander, a quiet sit, or a picnic with a view. The scale is generous enough for a proper outing, but you can get a satisfying sense of the place without committing to a long hike. On clear days, look up the valley toward Yr Wyddfa; on grey days, the low cloud and dark water make the landscape feel more dramatic.
Plan it wellThe A498 runs along the northern shore, with small pullouts and access points near the water.
The A498 runs along the northern shore, with small pullouts and access points near the water. Use a marked layby or designated car park, never the carriageway, and expect the most convenient spaces to fill quickly in fine summer weather. The lake is popular, so a quieter early start is worth it if you want an unhurried shoreline or a clean reflection.
Treat the lake as open water. Mountain lakes stay cold throughout the year, and conditions can change quickly. Check the entry and exit point before getting in, swim with a buddy, carry a flotation aid, and do not dive or jump unless you have checked the depth and submerged hazards. If you bring a board or boat, wear a lifejacket and follow Check, Clean, Dry guidance before moving equipment to another waterway.

Early morning is the safest bet for calm water and reflections, while autumn brings colour to the wooded slopes around the lake. Low cloud can be beautiful, but it also shortens visibility and makes the surrounding roads and paths feel more serious. Bring a warm, waterproof layer even on a bright day, plus shoes that can cope with wet ground and uneven shore access.
