Homer Tunnel

A raw‑rock, 1.2 km road tunnel punched through granite beneath the Homer Saddle, linking the Hollyford side to the Cleddau Valley on State Highway 94. It sits around 945 m at the east portal and drops steeply toward Milford Sound on a noticeable 1:10 gradient. It’s the crucial link that makes driving to Milford Sound possible.

• Expect signal‑controlled traffic and short queues, especially in summer. You’ll often wait your turn at the portals.
• Lanes are very tight; passing larger vehicles can feel close and there’s typically no centerline. Keep speed down, lights on, and follow directions.
• No stopping inside the tunnel. Use nearby pullouts before or after if you want photos.

• Weather turns quickly at this altitude; the Milford Road can close for avalanches or rockfall, particularly in winter. A modern avalanche shelter sits on the eastern approach, but closures still happen.
• It’s dark, steep, and can feel claustrophobic. Take it slow and give yourself space.
• There’s no fee, and there are no services at the tunnel itself.

Kea (the mischievous alpine parrot) often patrol the area where vehicles queue. They’re entertaining—and notorious for pecking at rubber trims and bags—so keep gear stowed and admire them from a respectful distance.

The Milford Road is stacked with stops; Monkey Creek and other roadside viewpoints bookend the tunnel and are better places to pull over for photos than the portals.

Work started in 1935 and, after nearly two decades of hard labor through solid granite, the tunnel opened in the 1950s—transforming access to Milford Sound from an expedition into a road trip.
