Trail guide
This 16.7-mile loop links the southern and northern ends of Franconia Ridge, climbing four recognized 4,000-footers: Flume, Liberty, Lincoln and Lafayette. From the Flume Gorge access, walk north on the Franconia Notch Bike Path to Liberty Spring Trail. Climb to the ridge, turn south over Liberty to Mount Flume and retrace that ridge section, then continue north over Liberty, Little Haystack and Lincoln to Lafayette. Descend by Greenleaf Trail past Greenleaf Hut, continue down Old Bridle Path to Lafayette Place, and walk south on the Bike Path to close the loop at Flume. The stated distance includes about 4.4 miles on the paved Bike Path and the roughly 2.6-mile Flume out-and-back. This is the full traverse, distinct from the shorter Lafayette–Lincoln loop that omits Flume and Liberty.
Treat this as a full-day commitment: allow roughly 11–13 hours, with a 12-hour typical estimate. The Liberty Spring climb and the repeated ascent over Liberty make the southern half demanding; the descent from Lafayette is also long and rough. Most of the mileage is rocky mountain trail, not quick walking. This is an exceptionally strenuous hike for experienced hikers who can keep a steady pace over a long day. The shorter Lafayette–Lincoln loop is a better choice if you want the exposed ridge without the southern peaks and long Bike Path return.
Liberty Spring Trail climbs from the Bike Path to the ridge near Liberty. From the junction, the full traverse first turns south over Liberty and drops into the col before climbing to Flume's rocky summit. Turn around there and regain Liberty before continuing north. Both summits have open rock among the trees, with places to pause and views across the Notch. The spring is a short descent below the Liberty Spring junction; it is the last known water source before the dry ridge, so do not count on it being available when you pass.
North of Liberty, the tread winds among low, weather-shaped trees and shrubs, with views opening between them. Little Haystack is a high rocky summit on the way to Lincoln. Beyond it, the ridge becomes bare rock, with little protection from wind or poor weather. Low stone walls mark the route and protect fragile alpine plants; stay between the walls and on the tread. Lafayette is the highest summit on this route and the ridge remains exposed for a long stretch before the descent begins.
From Lafayette, Greenleaf Trail drops over rough, rocky ground toward Greenleaf Hut. In cloud or poor visibility, this section can be hard to follow. The hut sits on the route and can be a useful pause when open; check its current service hours before relying on food or water there. Old Bridle Path continues downhill with several openings back toward Lafayette, Lincoln and the ravines, then reaches Lafayette Place and the Bike Path.
Start at the Bike Path access by Flume Gorge Visitor Center parking, follow it north to Liberty Spring, and use the same path south after Old Bridle Path to return. The full route crosses Franconia Notch State Park as well as White Mountain National Forest. State Park rules permit pets only in designated dog-walk areas near the Flume and Tramway lots, so pets cannot accompany visitors on this Bike Path loop. The exposed ridge has little shelter if wind, rain or low visibility develops; the long descent still remains after Lafayette.
