Hiking Mount Liberty and Mount Flume via Liberty Spring Trail

Reach Liberty Spring TrailFrom the Liberty Springs parking access off US 3, follow the Pemi and Whitehouse connector,…

From the Liberty Springs parking access off US 3, follow the Pemi and Whitehouse connector, briefly using the paved recreation path and crossing a bridge over the Pemigewasset River. That easy start is part of the mileage above. Liberty Spring Trail then climbs steadily through forest; its early footing is softer, with long switchbacks. Stay on Liberty Spring at the Flume Slide Trail junction. From there the climb continues for about 2.3 miles to Franconia Ridge, followed by a steep final 0.3 mile to Liberty. The upper climb is sustained, so save energy for the ridge and the return.

Liberty’s exposed rock outcrop opens to broad views over the Pemigewasset Wilderness and toward Flume. From the ridge junction, Liberty Springs Tentsite is a side trip about 0.3 mile down Liberty Spring Trail. It has tent platforms, a composting privy, a dishwashing station and a spring, but the water is not potable; bring enough water or a treatment method.

The ridge walk from Liberty to Flume is about 1.2 miles. It drops over steep rock slabs into a col, levels through a muddy stretch, then climbs steeply to Flume’s summit. Flume’s views are more tree-restricted in one direction, but the summit gives you a second high point before the return. The route turns around there; it does not continue north along the longer Franconia Ridge traverse.

The return is part of the challengeRetrace the same ridge to Liberty, climb back over its summit, and descend Liberty Spring Trail.

Retrace the same ridge to Liberty, climb back over its summit, and descend Liberty Spring Trail. You will repeat the slabs and the steep Liberty approach in reverse before the forest trail eases toward the connector. From the Pemi Trail junction, walk the final 0.7 mile back to the parking access. The return is why this is a demanding day even for hikers comfortable with the approach: both the ridge and the last climb to Liberty come around again after Flume.

Access, footing and dogsExpect uneven trail, sustained steep grades and exposed summit rock, with wet, muddy footing…

Expect uneven trail, sustained steep grades and exposed summit rock, with wet, muddy footing possible in the col. NH State Parks limits pets at Franconia Notch to designated dog-walk areas near the Tramway and Flume lots; the Whitehouse and Liberty Springs approach is outside those areas, so do not bring a dog on this route. The National Forest’s general dog rules do not override the State Park restriction on the approach. Current lot capacity and route-specific parking fees were not confirmed, so check posted information when you arrive.
