Trail guide
Bullhead Lake is a 6.8-mile out-and-back from Swiftcurrent Pass Trailhead beside Swiftcurrent Motor Inn. The route follows the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail up the valley to Bullhead Lake’s shore, then returns the same way. It climbs about 500 feet in total and takes roughly 3½ hours with time for the lakes and falls. The climb is mild for the distance; the reward is a string of water stops and a lake beneath the high Swiftcurrent headwall. Published distances vary, so this figure follows the mapped main corridor and the short shore spur; optional side trips add a little distance.
The trail leaves from the west end of the Motor Inn parking area and crosses Wilbur Creek. At about a third of a mile, a short side path leads to Fishercap Lake; return to the main trail to continue west. Much of the valley walk is beneath trees, with open patches toward the surrounding peaks. Redrock Lake appears around 1.7 miles from the start. A little farther on, a fork leads to the cascading tiers of Redrock Falls, then you rejoin the main trail for the long, gradual walk toward Bullhead Lake.
Near the lake, the route crosses a suspension bridge and leaves the main Swiftcurrent Pass Trail for a short, informal path down to the shore. The lake sits below the headwall, with Mount Grinnell and Swiftcurrent Glacier framing the upper valley. The broader trail keeps climbing toward Swiftcurrent Pass; that steep extension is a different, much harder outing and is not included here. From the shore, the water and headwall make a strong composition, especially when the surface is still enough to reflect the cliffs.
Moose are sometimes seen around Fishercap Lake, but sightings are never guaranteed; give wildlife plenty of room. This is bear country, so carry bear spray where it is accessible and know how to use it. Dogs are not permitted on Glacier National Park trails or undeveloped lake shores. The Swiftcurrent Motor Inn area beside the trailhead has seasonal food, a store and public restrooms; services are not available year-round. Snowmelt and bridge conditions change through the season; check the park’s current trail status before a shoulder-season hike.
