Swiftcurrent Lookout Trail

Swiftcurrent Lookout Trail is the final, exposed climb to the fire lookout on Swiftcurrent Mountain. From the Swiftcurrent Trailhead beside Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, the out-and-back follows the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail past the valley lakes, climbs to Swiftcurrent Pass, then takes a steep spur to the summit. The mapped route is about 16.5 miles round trip, with roughly 4,000 feet of climbing. Other full-route measurements run 17.5 to 17.6 miles, so plan for a very long day, not a precise half-mile count. I’d allow 10 to 12 hours and save this for a clear day when you have the fitness and daylight for a sustained climb.

The first miles wind through forest beside Fishercap, Redrock, and Bullhead lakes. The opening is gentler than the climb ahead, and Redrock Falls makes a worthwhile short detour near Redrock Lake; that side trip is not included in the mapped distance. Beyond Bullhead Lake, the route gets rockier and steeper as it turns toward the high basin. Waterfalls spill from the headwall and Swiftcurrent Glacier comes into view above the valley.

The trail makes a long climb over rocky slopes and open switchbacks to Swiftcurrent Pass. The pass is a broad saddle with a view back down the lakes, but it is not the summit. If the miles or weather have caught up with you, turning around here still makes a substantial hike: about 13.6 miles round trip from the Motor Inn trailhead. Continuing adds roughly 2.8 miles and the steepest, most exposed climbing.

From the pass, the lookout spur climbs Swiftcurrent Mountain’s southern slope in sustained switchbacks over loose rock and scree. There’s little shade, and the summit can feel far away from below; each turn opens a wider view across the Livingston Range, the Garden Wall, glaciers, and Many Glacier’s chain of lakes. The historic lookout sits on the rocky summit at about 8,400 feet. For a photo that shows the scale, include the lookout or ridge with the lakes far below.

The broad valleys, steep headwalls, cirques, and hanging lakes visible from the summit were carved by glaciers. The Swiftcurrent Fire Lookout was built in 1936; seeing the small timber structure on that bare summit is part of the payoff, not just a marker at the top.

The last climb is steep, exposed, and uneven, and the route is long enough that fatigue on the descent matters. High-country snow can linger into July and return in fall, so check the park’s current trail status before setting out. Start at the Swiftcurrent Trailhead parking lot by the Motor Inn; it serves several popular hikes, so an early start helps in summer. Pets are not allowed on park trails. No dependable food or water source was verified along the route, so plan to carry what you need from the trailhead.
