Hiking Fishercap Lake Trail

Fishercap Lake Trail is an easy out-and-back from the Swiftcurrent Trailhead by Swiftcurrent Motor Inn to a shallow, marshy lake. The mapped corridor is about 0.32 mile one way; plan on about 0.6 mile round trip and roughly half an hour of walking. People come mainly to scan the water and shore for moose, but sightings are never guaranteed, and the lake is still a quiet pause if none appear.

Find the lake spurStart from the Motor Inn parking lot and follow the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail west.

Start from the Motor Inn parking lot and follow the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail west. After roughly a quarter mile, watch for the small turn toward the lake; the spur descends through trees to the shore and can be easy to miss. Turn around at the lake and return the same way. This is the short Fishercap walk, not the separate Swiftcurrent Cabins loop or the longer route to Redrock Falls. Pets are not permitted on Glacier trails or undeveloped lake shores. In the shoulder seasons, check current road and trail reports because snow and mud can change access.

The shallow, vegetated shore is a good place to pause and look for moose, especially early or late in the day. Wait quietly and use binoculars rather than moving closer; keep at least 25 yards from moose and other wildlife and 100 yards from bears. On a still morning the lake can reflect the surrounding peaks, with the marshy edge in the foreground. Never approach an animal for a closer view or photograph.
