Trail guide
Redrock Falls is a 3.6-mile out-and-back from Swiftcurrent Trailhead to Redrock Lake and a series of cascades. The direct route is about 1.8 miles each way and takes roughly two to three hours with time at the water. It’s a good choice when you want lake-and-waterfall scenery without a long, steep climb. The approach is mostly wooded, so the best views arrive toward the end.
From the far end of the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn parking lot, the trail crosses Wilbur Creek and heads through forest. Around a third of a mile in, a short side path reaches Fishercap Lake; the lake shore is less than a hundred yards from its junction. The main trail continues west, with a long band of aspen around eight-tenths of a mile and occasional mountain views through the trees.
Fishercap is a good place to pause and scan the water’s edge for moose. People often watch there in the morning or evening, but sightings aren’t guaranteed. If you’re keeping the outing short, visit the lake and turn back instead of committing to the falls. That spur adds walking, so the 3.6-mile figure here follows the direct route.
Redrock Lake appears about 1.7 miles from the trailhead. Follow its north shore toward the west end, where the trail reaches Redrock Falls. From the lake, look southwest toward Mount Grinnell and Swiftcurrent Glacier, and west toward Swiftcurrent Mountain and its fire tower.
The payoff is a run of cascades spilling over red-toned rock, not one tall waterfall. There are lower and upper places to look from; the higher cascades involve a short scramble on rocky ground. From an established viewing spot, include some of the reddish boulders around the water in a photo. They give the scene its color and make the lake-and-falls setting easier to recognize later.
The trail is a mild, rolling walk for most of its length, with the uneven, slick footing concentrated near the water. You can enjoy the lake and lower falls without scrambling to every upper cascade. This route is much shorter and gentler than the longer walks that continue toward Bullhead Lake or Swiftcurrent Pass; stop at Redrock Falls if the waterfall is the day’s goal.
Use the Swiftcurrent Trailhead at the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn parking lot. The lot can fill on busy days. A restaurant, camp store, and flush restrooms are in the inn complex beside the trailhead, not along the route; these services are seasonal. Many Glacier access is seasonal too, so check current road and trail status before driving in.
Pets are not permitted on Glacier trails, including this one. Lower-elevation paths can be muddy or wet in spring, and creek conditions can change; the NPS trail-status page is the place to check for current hazards. The modest climb doesn’t make the walk a dry, paved stroll: expect natural trail footing, then take extra care on the rocks by the falls.
