Campsites and facilities

There are 23 sites: 12 tent-only sites and 11 drive-in sites for camper trailers and similar setups. Sites are unpowered and need to be booked ahead. Shared fireplaces and picnic tables make camp cooking straightforward, but bring your own firewood and use only the designated fireplaces.

The facilities are deliberately basic: pit toilets, parking, picnic tables, and untreated tank water. The tank water is not drinking water, so carry enough potable water for your group. Pack food, cooking equipment, lighting, and a rubbish bag as if you are camping without a nearby shop or service centre.

More about Boreang Campground

Why stay hereBoreang is a quiet bush campground in open eucalyptus woodland, about 16 kilometres south of…

Boreang is a quiet bush campground in open eucalyptus woodland, about 16 kilometres south of Halls Gap. It is a practical base for exploring the central and western parts of the park, especially if you want more space and a slower evening than you will find around the busier hubs.

The campground is a place to settle in rather than a standalone lookout. Its appeal is the combination of sheltered trees, open clearings, simple campsites, and easy access to nearby walks and scenic drives. Use it as a base for Paddy Castle's unusual rock formations, the Balconies, Mount Thackeray, Zumsteins, and the MacKenzie Falls area.

Getting there and choosing your timeThe campground is best approached from Glenelg River Road.

The campground is best approached from Glenelg River Road. The access roads are unsealed and suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles in reasonable conditions, but they can become slippery after rain. Allow extra time, drive carefully, and avoid arriving after dark when you are unfamiliar with the layout.

Dawn and dusk are the best times to watch the campground come alive. Kangaroos and wallabies may graze around the open grassland, while kookaburras, cockatoos, and other native birds move through the trees. Red-tailed black cockatoos and gang-gang cockatoos are possible sightings, but never feed or approach wildlife and keep food secured.

Boreang suits self-sufficient campers who value quiet and a good location over polished facilities. Bring warm layers, sturdy shoes, drinking water, firewood, and everything you need for your stay. In wet weather, the road is the main inconvenience; in dry weather, dust, sun, and the exposed clearing are the things to plan around.
