Overview

About Paddy Castle Walk

Why go

  • Distinctive sandstone formation for very little walking

Heads up

  • Short outing with limited route variety
  • Rocky steps and uneven ground
Paddy Castle is a distinctive orange and grey sandstone outcrop rising out of the Victoria Valley. It is the whole reason to stop here, and the walk is short enough that the rock does the work. Expect to use your hands here and there if you move around on the rock itself, but nothing that needs technical skills or gear.

“Paddy Castle's walking car park is ahead, a handy stop for a small sandstone summit above the Victoria Valley. I'd choose this walk for the orange and grey rock itself as well as the broad valley views.”

An out-and-back stroll of 0.6 km total return (about 316 m each way, so the figure counts both directions). Some route guides round it up to 700 m return. Allow 30 to 45 minutes, since most of that time goes on poking around the rock rather than walking.

From the signed access and small car park on Glenelg River Road, the named track heads off the roadside and climbs gently to Paddy Castle, then you return the same way. There is no loop option and no continuation past the outcrop.

Difficulty and footingEasy overall in terms of effort and length.

Easy overall in terms of effort and length. The approach is a rocky path with steps and uneven ground, so it is not a smooth surface walk. Footwear with grip matters more than fitness here.

Permanent hazards to take seriously:

Keep back from edges and watch where children wander.

  • Unstable cliffs around the formation
  • Slippery rock surfaces
