Plan your hike

Before you go

Parking

Park at Bundaleers Carpark on Rosea Track. The approach uses gravel roads and a seasonal access track.

Best time to go

The summit platform faces south and west, so late afternoon into evening gives the strongest light across the ranges and valley, with long shadows picking out the ridgelines. Early morning is better for cooler walking on the exposed upper slopes and for softer light on the rock formations themselves. Carry a light source if you plan to linger for sunset, since the descent through the overgrown sections is slower than the map distance suggests.

Safety

Steep uneven terrain, overgrown route-finding sections, and a short rock scramble. Falling limbs or trees are possible. Dogs are not allowed.

Tower Hill Walk is a short but demanding out-and-back in the Serra Range Remote and Natural Area, running 4.6 km return from Bundaleers Carpark to the Tower Hill summit viewpoint. Allow about 3 hours, and expect a rating of roughly 7/10 for difficulty: the length is modest, but the climb, the rough and overgrown sections, and a short scramble make it a walk for people with some bushwalking experience.

  • Start on the 4WD-style management track from the carpark area, an easy graded warm up of roughly the first 1.8 km.
  • The route narrows to a footpad that traces the northern face of the hill, climbing steadily and becoming noticeably steeper as it gains the upper slopes.
  • Near the top you pass balanced and sculpted rock formations, sometimes described by walkers using informal nicknames rather than official names.
  • A short rock scramble lifts you onto a flat rock platform, the natural end point of the walk, with open outlooks south and west across the valley toward the Victoria Range. Return by the same corridor.
Difficulty, footing and route findingSteep, uneven ground through the middle and upper sections, with rocky steps and rough footing.
  • Steep, uneven ground through the middle and upper sections, with rocky steps and rough footing.
  • Overgrown and less defined stretches where scrub crowds the path, so watch ahead for the continuation of the pad.
  • Route finding matters. The line is generally followable but not consistently obvious, and it pays to keep track of your return route.
  • Hands-on scrambling for a short section near the summit rocks.
  • Also be aware of a minor creek crossing on the lower approach and the general risk of falling limbs or trees in this bushland setting.

  • Trailhead is Bundaleers Carpark on Rosea Track, reached by gravel roads plus a seasonal access track.
  • Access along that corridor varies through the year, so check current access before driving out to the trailhead.
  • Dogs are not allowed, and no fires are permitted.
Landscape and vegetationThe hill is built from the tilted sandstone that defines the Serra Range, and the upper route…

The hill is built from the tilted sandstone that defines the Serra Range, and the upper route moves through weathered outcrops, slabs and perched boulders before opening onto bare rock. Low heath and scrub dominate the exposed ground, and spring wildflowers are a highlight of the climb.

Good to knowTreat this as its own walk.
  • Treat this as its own walk. A longer, separate route links Tower Hill with Calectasia Falls, and that continuation is indistinct and overgrown.
  • For a longer and better formed summit day nearby, Mount Rosea is the obvious alternative, reached from the same road corridor.
  • Elevation figures for the summit vary between sources, so plan by time and terrain rather than a stated height.
