Overview

About Gulgurn Manja Aboriginal Rock Art Site

Why stop

  • Distinctive rock art tied to Jarwadjali cultural history

Heads up

  • Short track is rockier and more exposed than the distance suggests
Gulgurn Manja is a protected Aboriginal rock-art shelter at the northern tip of Gariwerd. The overhang, weathered sandstone and quiet bush setting give the stop a real sense of place, while the art offers a close look at Jarwadjali cultural history rather than another generic lookout.

The short walkFrom Hollow Mountain car park, a signed track reaches the shelter in about 15 minutes.

From Hollow Mountain car park, a signed track reaches the shelter in about 15 minutes. Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes return for the visit; the commonly described route is around 1 to 1.5 kilometres. It is an easy outing overall, with a gentle rise and an uneven, rocky surface. Wear shoes with a firm grip, especially after rain.

What you will seeLook up beneath the shelter for red-ochre handprints, bars and emu tracks.

Look up beneath the shelter for red-ochre handprints, bars and emu tracks. The name Gulgurn Manja refers to the hands of young people, and many of the handprints are associated with generations of children. The approach also opens views through the trees toward the rugged northern Grampians, so the short walk has more visual payoff than the destination alone suggests.

Plan it wellThe approach has limited shade and can feel hot in the middle of the day.

The approach has limited shade and can feel hot in the middle of the day. Cooler mornings are the most comfortable; late afternoon can give the sandstone warmer light, while the art itself is easiest to study in the shelter's even shade. Bring water and sun protection because there is no reason to expect visitor services at the art site.

Treat this as a living cultural place. Stay on the track and behind the protective fence, do not touch the paintings or sandstone, and keep voices low. Give yourself time to look closely rather than rushing through on the way to Hollow Mountain.
