Before you go

Parking

Start at the Mt Zero Picnic Area off the unsealed Mount Zero roads. The route finishes at the Gar Trailhead on Roses Gap Road. Arrange a vehicle shuffle between the two access points or use a licensed tour operator.

Best time to go

Wildflowers, seasonal creeks and a short waterfall near Barigar are all weather-dependent features, strongest in cooler, wetter months and often quiet later in the year, so never count on flowing water for drinking. The landscape is the draw in any season: tilted sandstone slabs, cliff lines and the sheer face of Taipan Wall above the amphitheatre.

For photography, front-load Day 1 so you reach the amphitheatre and Mt Stapylton while the light is still low and the rock has texture, then take the ridgeline as the day opens up. On Day 2, an early departure from camp puts you on the switchbacks and at Gar in cooler, softer light with long views over the range.

Safety

Grade 4 terrain is steep, rough and uneven, with exposed rocky slabs, boulders, rock steps and limited wayfinding in places. Manage fatigue carefully. Barigar and Gar tank water is untreated, so carry treatment equipment and enough capacity. Ordinary pets are not permitted in the national park.

Hiking Barigar Overnight Hike

The shape of the walkA 16.

A 16.0 km point-to-point route walked over two days with one night out, starting at Mt Zero Picnic Area and finishing at the Gar Trailhead on Roses Gap Road, with an overnight stop at Barigar Hike-in Campground. The split is deliberately lopsided: 12.1 km on Day 1, then a short but steep 3.9 km on Day 2.

Day 1 leaves Mt Zero at about 250 m through low forest and dense shrub, crosses Golton Creek and the Coppermine Track, then works up into the Stapylton Amphitheatre past Taipan Wall and Bird Rock to Mt Stapylton at about 518 m. From there the walking is exposed rocky battlements, open rock slabs and boulders along the ridgeline before a long descent to Barigar at about 230 m. Day 2 climbs out of camp through grassy woodland on switchbacks and rock steps toward the Mt Difficult Range and Gar at about 806 m, the high point of the trip, before dropping to the trailhead. Strong walkers can push the whole thing into one long day, but the overnight format suits the terrain far better.

This is Grade 4 and part of a trail network suited to experienced hikers: steep, rough and demanding, with limited wayfinding in places. Expect slab, boulder and loose rock underfoot, plus rock steps on the Day 2 climb. The ridgeline sections are open and exposed, so pace yourself, carry a full pack comfortably, and plan around fatigue rather than distance alone.

  • The trail itself is free to walk, but the hike-in campgrounds are bookable and charged, so secure your Barigar night before you commit to the shuffle.
  • Barigar and Gar have rainwater tanks holding untreated water. Carry treatment equipment and enough capacity for a hot, exposed day.
  • Ordinary pets are not permitted in the park. Assistance-dog rules are handled separately.

Because the route is one-way, you need a vehicle shuffle between Mt Zero Picnic Area and the Gar Trailhead, about 45 minutes return, or a transfer with a licensed tour operator. Sort this before you start walking: leave a car at Gar, drive back to Mt Zero, and begin from there so the finish drops you straight at your transport.
