Hiking Gulgurn Manja Shelter Walk

The walk in shortThis is an out-and-back walk of 1.

This is an out-and-back walk of 1.5 km total return, roughly 740 m each way, and most people take about 45 minutes including time at the shelter. It is graded Australian Grade 2 (easy) with one short steep pinch. The return leg simply retraces the same corridor back to the carpark, so there is no loop to plan for and no need to arrange a second pick-up point.

Start at Hollow Mountain Carpark, off the Mount Zero Road area, which is the official access point for this walk. The path climbs gently and steadily through rock and scrub country to the Gulgurn Manja shelter, a low overhang beneath the cliffs. Total elevation gain is modest, around 30 m from the carpark flats to the shelter, spread over a few short rises. The reward is the rock art itself plus open views back over the surrounding Wimmera Plains and across nearby cliff and ridge lines.

The mapped line follows a named, compacted path with excellent visibility, so route-finding is straightforward. Expect gentle inclines with one short but steeper section, plus patches of uneven ground. Editorially it rates 4/10, and shoes with grip make the steep pinch and the descent on the way back much more comfortable.

The shelter is a culturally significant Aboriginal rock-art site associated with the Jardwadjali people, with handprints, bars and emu-track motifs still visible on the rock. The overhang is quartz-rich sandstone and the art is protected by mesh. Treat the place with respect: look, stay behind the protection, and do not touch or disturb the art or the rock surface. The shelter faces north-east, an orientation that has helped shield it from the prevailing south-westerly rain.

Rules and hazardsDogs are not allowed at this national park site; separate assistance-dog requirements apply.
  • Dogs are not allowed at this national park site; separate assistance-dog requirements apply.
  • No fires and no firearms.
  • Parks Victoria warns of unstable cliffs in this area, so stay on the formed path, keep well back from cliff edges and drop-offs, and keep children close.

If you want a bigger climb and more dramatic rock formations, Hollow Mountain leaves from the same carpark area and is a considerably steeper, rockier proposition. Gulgurn Manja is the short, culturally focused option, and the two are easy to compare when deciding how much effort you are up for.
