Overview

About Mount Zero (Mura Mura) Picnic Area

Why stop

  • Useful base for Mount Zero and Mount Stapylton walks
  • Quiet bush setting with granite peaks nearby

Heads up

  • Rough approach road and exposed rocky walks beyond the tables
Mount Zero Picnic Area is the useful northern base for the Mount Zero and Mount Stapylton walks, with a handful of tables tucked into eucalyptus woodland. It is a good place to pause, eat, and decide how much rock scrambling you want to do next. The picnic ground itself is shaded and quiet, but the real payoff comes from the tracks that leave it.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Go early or late in the day for cooler temperatures, softer light on the granite, and a better chance of having the tables and short walk to yourself. Spring is especially appealing for flowers in the surrounding bush. Carry water, wear shoes with reliable grip, and allow extra time if the rock is wet or the heat is strong. Watch for wildlife around the woodland and open rock, but give animals space and never feed them.

This is a worthwhile stop when you are already exploring the northern Grampians or planning one of the walks. It is less compelling as a standalone picnic destination if you are not going beyond the tables: the setting is pleasant, but the distinctive experience is the granite country and the views reached from the tracks.

More about Mount Zero (Mura Mura) Picnic Area

What to expectThere are picnic tables, compacted parking, and a basic unisex pit toilet.

There are picnic tables, compacted parking, and a basic unisex pit toilet. A water tank is present, but bring your own drinking water rather than relying on an unconfirmed supply. The information boards at the trail entrance help orient walkers, and the picnic area is also a starting point for longer northern sections of the Grampians Peaks Trail.

The approach is remote and includes a rough, unsealed road. Take it slowly, especially after rain, and do not assume the surface will be kind to a low-clearance vehicle or fragile tyres. Once you leave the tables, expect uneven ground, exposed rock, and little help with route-finding if you wander off the marked tracks.

Why stopThe Mount Zero Walk is the approachable option: about 2.8 km return and usually 1 to 1.

The Mount Zero Walk is the approachable option: about 2.8 km return and usually 1 to 1.5 hours, with steps, uneven rock, and a steeper finish. Cross the Halls Gap–Mount Zero Road carefully, then follow the marked track uphill. Near the top, the route moves onto broad boulders and sloping rock, leading to wide views over the northern ranges and plains. Mount Stapylton routes start from the same area and make a more demanding outing.
