Overview

About Mount Stapylton (Gunigalg)

Why stop

  • Broad summit views over the Grampians and Wimmera plains
  • Sandstone cliffs, a cave and climbing walls give the walk real variety

Heads up

  • Steep scrambling and slick rock demand confidence
  • The exposed summit is windy and has little shade
Mount Stapylton (Gunigalg) is the northern Grampians at their most rugged: a high sandstone summit above open forest, with broad views across the ranges and Wimmera plains. The route earns its payoff. It threads forested gullies, crosses water-etched rock terraces, scrambles up Flat Rock, passes the sheer climbing cliffs of Taipan Wall, then climbs to isolated summit rocks and a cave. Peregrine falcons hunt around the cliffs; kangaroos are more likely around the campground and lower bush than on the exposed summit.

Before you go

Best time to go

This is a walk for fit, sure-footed visitors. Wet rock can become slippery, and the upper route is exposed to wind with little shade. Clear mornings and late afternoon give the sandstone more texture for photographs, while cooler parts of the day are more comfortable for the climb. Carry water, food, sun protection, a windproof or waterproof layer and shoes with dependable grip. Do not climb beyond the walking route or approach unprotected edges. Dogs are not allowed in the national park.

More about Mount Stapylton (Gunigalg)

Choose your outingThe official Mount Stapylton Loop Walk is about 12.

The official Mount Stapylton Loop Walk is about 12.2 kilometres from Stapylton Campground and involves steep climbs, rock hopping, scrambling and water crossings. Fit walkers should allow several hours. A shorter roughly 4.6-kilometre return approach from the Mount Zero side is the usual choice in visitor reports; it still has a steep final rock section and is not an easy stroll. Follow the triangular trail markers through rocky sections, especially where the route becomes less obvious.

Practical notesThere are no visitor facilities on the summit.

There are no visitor facilities on the summit. If you start from Stapylton Campground, the campground has pit toilets, picnic tables, shared fireplaces and untreated tank water. Bring your own drinking water rather than relying on the tank. The campground is also a useful place to look for kangaroos, but keep wildlife at a distance and secure food. Mount Stapylton is worth the effort for visitors who want a proper sandstone summit and a quieter northern-Grampians outing; choose a shorter lookout if you want an easy scenic stop.
