Before you go

Best time to go

Kangaroos commonly graze around the open campground, especially when the site is quiet. Wallabies and emus are possible in the surrounding bush, but give all wildlife space and never leave food unattended. Early morning is the best time for calm conditions and animal watching; late afternoon brings warmer light across the clearing and Mount Stapylton.

The open setting is pleasant in clear weather but offers limited shelter from sun and wind. Pack a shade shelter, warm layers and sturdy shoes, and allow extra time for the unsealed approach road. Spring can add wildflowers to the wider Grampians landscape, while cooler shoulder-season days are often more comfortable for walking and setting up camp.

Campsites and facilities

There are seven walk-in tent sites, six drive-in sites for camper trailers, caravans, campervans and larger tents, plus six group sites. Sites are unpowered and bookings are required. Tent sites are a short walk from the parking area, while drive-in and group sites have their own vehicle access or shared camping arrangements.

Expect a straightforward bush-camping setup: designated fire pits with barbecue plates, picnic tables, an undercover area, pit toilets and bush showers. Tank water is untreated and not for drinking, so bring enough potable water for everyone in your group. There is no rubbish collection, and firewood is not supplied. Use only the designated fireplaces and take all rubbish with you.

“Up ahead is Stapylton Campground, the starting point for a short walk to Ngamadjidj Shelter. The reason to stop is a group of pale, human-like figures painted with white clay beneath a sandstone overhang.”

Stapylton is a useful base for the northern Grampians, with open eucalyptus woodland and a clear view toward Mount Stapylton. It feels more like a practical bush camp than a destination built around one formal lookout, but the rocky skyline gives the campground a stronger sense of place than most overnight stops.

The campground puts you close to Mount Stapylton's walking routes, Aboriginal rock shelters, day-visitor sites and nearby climbing areas. It is a good choice when you want to spend more time in the Mount Zero and Mount Stapylton corner of Gariwerd rather than drive back to Halls Gap after every outing.

The campground is reached from Olive Plantation Road and the approach is unsealed, although it is suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles in reasonable conditions. Bring food, drinking water, firewood and a rubbish bag. There are no powered hookups or shop facilities at the site.

Dogs are not allowed in the national park, and generators, bicycles, horses and firearms are prohibited here. For the best chance of a quiet pitch and a relaxed start on the Mount Stapylton Loop Walk, arrive with daylight to spare and keep camp setup compact.
