Overview

About Venus Baths

Why stop

  • Shallow sandstone pools and flowing creek water

Heads up

  • Water can fade to stagnant pools in hot, dry weather
  • Smooth rocks become slippery after rain
Venus Baths is a chain of shallow natural pools where Stony Creek slides across smooth sandstone. Water curls over broad rock ledges into rounded basins, so the experience feels more like a creekside pause than a hike to one single waterfall. The open rock shelves and layered water make easy, memorable photo foregrounds.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Visit after useful rain if you want the creek flowing through the pools, ideally in a season warm enough to enjoy the water. Hot, dry periods can leave the basins low or stagnant. If the water has stopped moving, admire the rock formations from the edge rather than entering it.

The walk is popular in the middle of the day, especially with families. An early start is usually quieter, while later afternoon can bring softer light across the sandstone. Allow extra time after rain, when the smooth rock can be slick.

  • 2.3 km loop, about 1 hour, easy. Start in Halls Gap near the Botanic Gardens and follow Stony Creek through woodland to the pools.
  • The garden-side route is the flatter option. A second approach near the caravan park includes steps and uneven ground.
  • The pools are mostly shallow and better for paddling or cooling your feet than for a proper swim.
Know before you goBring water and snacks. There are no visitor facilities at the pools.
