Powell Point

Powell Point is a South Rim overlook on Hermit Road, marked by a raised stone memorial platform at the rim. The ridge opens a broad canyon view, and the shuttle stop makes this an easy short stop. Keep it in your sequence if the memorial's history interests you; the view is wide, though several Hermit Road overlooks in a row can start to feel similar.

Powell Point sits between Maricopa and Hopi Points on the rim path, about 0.5 mile from Maricopa and 0.3 mile from Hopi, with dirt trail sections. Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 through November 30, when the free Red Route shuttle serves the overlooks. In December through February, vehicles under 22 feet can drive the road and the shuttle does not run. NPS lists seating and historic interpretation at the stop.

Congress set aside $5,000 for the memorial in 1909 to recognize John Wesley Powell's service as director of the U.S. Geological Survey. The finished design is a raised platform of rough-hewn local stone with a brass plaque; an earlier idea was a Roman chair facing the canyon. It commemorates Powell's 1869 and 1871–72 river expeditions. An early dedication wrongly described him as the canyon's first explorer. Indigenous peoples had lived in and around the Grand Canyon for thousands of years before those trips, so the memorial marks one chapter of a much longer human history here.

Use the stone platform as a foreground detail with the layered canyon beyond it. That shows both what makes this stop distinct and the view it was built to frame.
