Overview
A narrow spur on Hermit Road, Powell Point mixes sweeping canyon vistas with real park history. You walk out onto a finger of rim so the canyon wraps around you, then meet the hefty granite memorial to John Wesley Powell—leader of the 1869 and 1872 river expeditions.
Why it’s worth your time
If you like big views without Hopi Point’s crush, this is your play. It’s a touch mellower at sunset and adds a sense of occasion thanks to the monument and interpretive panels. The Grand Canyon’s formal park dedication happened here in 1920.

Note: The river itself sits too deep here to be seen from the point, and part of the western view can be nudged by neighboring Hopi Point.
Getting there
Powell Point sits between Maricopa Point and Hopi Point along Hermit Road. It’s an easy, pleasant 10-minute walk from Maricopa through open pines. Westbound shuttles serve this stop; eastbound buses do not, so plan your hop-on/hop-off accordingly. Hermit Road is closed to most private vehicles much of the year, so think shuttle, bike, or your own two feet.
A bit of history
The granite monument (1915) honors Powell and his expedition teams and carries commemorations of the park’s anniversaries. This overlook was the site of the park’s formal dedication in 1920, which gives the stop more gravitas than your average viewpoint.
Wildlife
Common South Rim regulars are around the woodlands: ravens working thermals, rock squirrels trolling for handouts (don’t), and occasionally elk or mule deer near the road.
Best time to visit
Sunset is the money hour here—golden light on buttes, fewer people than Hopi Point, and easy photo compositions from the spur’s end. Early morning is peaceful if you’re walking the rim. Midday brings the biggest shuttle crowds and flatter light.
