Glacier View Turnout

Glacier View Turnout is a roadside overlook on US-191/26/89, with a level paved path to a low viewing area and an interpretive display about the glaciers. It looks across sagebrush flats and the Snake River corridor to the Teton Range. Stop for an easy read of the landscape; the glaciers are distant patches on the skyline, not a close-up encounter.

From Moose Junction, go about 4 miles north on US-191/26/89 and turn left into the turnout. It is not on Teton Park Road: Teton Glacier Turnout is a different stop with a similar name. The lot has about 26 spaces and no overflow parking. The path is paved and level, with designated accessible parking; there is no restroom.

Repeated Ice Age glaciers flowed down from the Tetons and spread across Jackson Hole, carving broad U-shaped valleys, steep cliffs and sharp ridges. The park's remaining glaciers survive where snow persists through summer, but all have retreated since the late 1800s, despite a brief period of advance in the mid-1970s to mid-1980s. On a clear day, look for Middle, Teepee and Teton glaciers high on the range.

Walk to the overlook and use a wide frame: the sagebrush plain and tree belt make the distant peaks easier to read. The stone interpretive display also gives a sense of scale if you include it in the foreground.
