More about Australian National Surfing Museum

A stop for surf historyThe Australian National Surfing Museum is an indoor museum in Torquay’s Surf City precinct,…

The Australian National Surfing Museum is an indoor museum in Torquay’s Surf City precinct, tracing Australian surfing through historic boards, memorabilia, films and the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame. Keep it on your list if surfboard design or surf culture interests you; if you’re here mainly for coastline, it can be a shorter indoor stop. General admission is self-guided, with no fixed time limit, so you can browse quickly or settle in for a film.

A boardwalk traces the development of surfboards beneath a sculpted breaking wave. The collection moves from historic boards to the clothes, films and music around surfing. Hall of Fame biographies are mounted on examples of boards their surfers rode, and a VW Kombi is one of the memorable objects. It’s a mix of sporting equipment and the culture that grew around it.

The museum opened as Surfworld in 1993, from an idea shared by Torquay surfers Peter Troy, Vic Tantau and Alan Reid. The project brought together the local council, the Australian Surfriders Association (now Surfing Australia), Torquay surf businesses and the Geelong Regional Commission. That history fits the setting: in 1972, a Surf Coast community campaign helped make nearby Bells Beach the world’s first Surfing Recreation Reserve.

How much interpretation to expectThis is an object-led visit.

This is an object-led visit. Some visitors enjoy the timeline and collection; others find the written interpretation sparse or hard to read, and some think the films feel dated. If you want a detailed label for every board, the museum may feel light. If the film program interests you, leave time to watch rather than rushing through the displays.

Making the Torquay stop workThe museum is at 77 Beach Road, near the Great Ocean Road’s Torquay gateway.

The museum is at 77 Beach Road, near the Great Ocean Road’s Torquay gateway. A car park, coach parking, public toilet, gift shop and free Wi-Fi are listed for the museum. The Torquay Visitor Information Centre shares the precinct and address, but it’s a separate service. Bells Beach is less than five kilometres from Torquay, making the museum an easy pairing with a beach stop. The museum welcomes people with access needs, though detailed mobility features aren’t published; check ahead if a particular setup matters.
