“Torquay's beaches are coming up, with two quite different ways to spend a break. For a picnic or calmer water, I'd choose Front Beach and its sheltered Cosy Corner beside Point Danger, though conditions still change.”

Torquay Front Beach is a roughly one-kilometre stretch of sand on central Torquay’s east-facing shore. It runs from Yellow Bluff to Point Danger, with a grassy foreshore between the beach and The Esplanade. Stop for a beach break, a shoreline walk or a picnic; the neighboring Torquay Surf Beach is the more exposed surf stop.

At the southern end, Cosy Corner sits beside Point Danger and is the more sheltered cove. It’s the better place to try if you want calmer water, but conditions change. When lifesavers are on duty, swim between the red and yellow flags.

The grassy reserve has public toilets, showers, change rooms, drinking water, a playground and picnic space. Formal and street parking serve the beach; nearby street spaces can get tight on warm or holiday days. Cafés and shops are close by in central Torquay if you want more than a beach picnic.

Bathing boxes started appearing along this sand in the 1880s, and Torquay’s first surf club stood among them. The beach itself was briefly called Surf Beach in the 1920s, when swimmers rarely went around the point to the rougher water.
