Overview

A 30‑metre ribbon of water plunging into a ferny gully, Erskine Falls is the Great Ocean Road’s classic rainforest waterfall. It’s an easy 15‑minute drive inland from Lorne, and most people come for the quick hit: a short stroll to the upper lookout and a tougher staircase to the base for mist‑on‑your‑face views. Figure on up to an hour if you do both platforms.

What You’ll See

Think cool‑temperate rainforest: mossy rock walls, tree ferns and tall eucalypts framing a sheer cascade into a plunge pool. The falls sit in the Otway Ranges’ layered sandstones and siltstones—streams here carve steep gorges and undercut weaker layers, which is why you get such a photogenic drop after rain.

Lookouts and Walks

Upper Lookout: a few minutes from the car park for a head‑on view of the falls.
Lower Lookout: about 230 steps down into the gully; it’s steeper, wetter, and worth it for the scale and spray.
Longer options: from the car park, the Erskine River Walk runs 7.5 km one‑way to Lorne with rock hopping and river crossings. From Blanket Leaf Picnic Area, the Lemonade Creek track reaches the falls in roughly 4–4.4 km one‑way.

Best Time to Visit

Winter to spring (June–October) or any time after solid rain gives the best flow. Summer brings lighter flow and bigger crowds; visit early or late on hot holiday weekends. The site is open 24 hours, so dawn and late afternoon are lovely for soft light.

Practicalities

Parking is a short walk from the upper platform but fills fast in peak periods; caravans are awkward here—use Blanket Leaf instead.
No toilets at the falls. The nearest facilities (including picnic tables and fire pits) are at Blanket Leaf Picnic Area about 2 km away.
Tracks, stairs and rocks can be slick—wear grippy footwear and stay on the platforms. Swimming isn’t recommended due to unknown depths and hazards.
Expect leeches in wet weather; pack repellent. Mobile reception is patchy. Dogs aren’t allowed (assistance dogs excepted).
People typically spend up to 1 hour here.

Current Conditions

As of November 20, 2025, the Cora Lynn Cascades walking track is closed, affecting through‑walks between Allenvale and Erskine Falls.

If towing a caravan, park at Blanket Leaf and walk the Lemonade Creek track to the falls.
Wear grippy shoes—the 230 steps to the lower lookout are steep and slick after rain.
For a bigger outing, hike the 7.5 km Erskine River Walk to Lorne with rock hopping and crossings.
Aim for winter–spring or visit after rain for the most impressive flow.
