Trail guide
The Jamieson Creek to Separation Creek Walk is an approximately 5 km one-way point-to-point route through coastal forest, from Jamieson Creek Campground to Olive Street in Separation Creek. Allow about 2.5 hours in this direction. It suits a longer forest walk with ocean glimpses; arrange a car shuttle between the ends, since walking back doubles the distance.
Short, moderate climbs lead to steep stone steps and a crossing on large stepping stones. A later creek crossing can become impassable after heavy rain. Do not attempt a crossing when the water is fast or high. After Wye Track, the route climbs more gently through forest before descending by steps to Olive Street.
The track passes vegetation affected by the 2015 Wye River fires. Wattles dominate parts of the understorey, and damaged eucalypts are recovering. Listen for birds including Eastern Yellow Robin, Rufous Bristlebird, Grey Fantail and Satin Bowerbird; fungi appear in season.
Before setting out, pause at the campground lookout for views of the sea, Great Ocean Road and the mouth of the St George River. It is the route’s clearest photo stop: frame the coast with the river mouth below. The campground has a shelter, toilets, picnic tables and gas barbecues. No drinking-water source is identified in the route information, so bring what you need. Dogs are not allowed in Great Otway National Park.
