Artillery Rocks

Artillery Rocks is a small sandstone outcrop at Separation Creek, on the Great Ocean Road between Lorne and Wye River and south of Jamieson Creek. Its unusual rounded, near-circular shapes are the draw. It suits a brief geology-minded pause on the coastal drive.

Some visitors mention steps to the rocks, but the safe public approach and roadside parking arrangement aren't clearly established. Mt Defiance Lookout is a separate roadside stop with panoramic ocean views toward Artillery Rocks; use it if you want a view from above without exploring the shore platform.

Sandstone forms broad platforms at the foot of forested slopes here, with reefs offshore. Visitors say lower tide can expose more rock shapes, but that isn't a safety guarantee: the shore has a high hazard rating of 8/10, with sharks, topographic rips and a high tide range listed as hazards, and no lifesaving services. If you photograph the rocks, include the pitted platform and rounded dark rocks together so the circular forms read clearly; don't step onto wet rock for a better angle.
