Trail guide
From Sheoak Picnic Area, this roughly 8.8 km (5.5 mi) loop follows Sheoak Creek to Lower Kalimna Falls, continues to Upper Falls, then returns on a different forest track. Allow about 3 to 3.5 hours. The creekside track crosses gullies by bridges and can be muddy after rain, so wet weather makes the longer circuit slower. The Lower Falls-only circuit from the same start is a shorter option.
The path follows the creek through tall eucalypts, ferns and wattles before a signed spur drops to Lower Falls. Water spills over an undercut rock ledge into a broad pool; the recess behind the fall feels like a small cave, with a view outward through the water. Retrace the spur to rejoin the main route.
Continue along the main track to Upper Kalimna Falls, a sequence of cascades. The loop then takes an alternate track back toward Sheoak Picnic Area, crossing a bridge and passing through a timber-tramway cutting before crossing the road to the Nature Trail. Follow the marked return rather than assuming the route ends at either waterfall.
The walk follows parts of old timber tramways that carried timber to Lorne Pier from the 1890s into the 1920s. A historic marker explains the logging era, and a few large old trees survived among younger growth. Tall eucalypts, arching tree ferns and the creekside fern gully give the route much of its character; seasonal flowers and fungi add detail along the way.
Sheoak Picnic Ground has toilets, picnic tables, an information board and gas barbecues; these are at the start, not along the loop. Bring your food and drinking water. Dogs are not permitted on park tracks on this walk.
