Trail guide
Phantom Falls and The Canyon Circuit is about 9.2 km (5.7 miles) as a complete loop from Sheoak Picnic Area. It follows ferny creek valleys to Won Wondah and Henderson Falls, threads The Canyon’s narrow rock cleft, reaches Phantom Falls and returns to Sheoak through Allenvale. Allow about three and a half hours. Rated moderate to difficult, it is a half-day waterfall walk, not a short viewpoint stroll. The distance includes about 2 km of road walking after Allenvale; with a car at Allenvale Mill Car Park, you can stop there instead, though the shorter shuttle distance is not published.
Start at the “The Canyon Walk” sign by the information board. The path passes through a fern glade and over Sheoak Creek; take the left fork toward Garvey Track. Cross the road, then Sharps Track about 100 m later, and follow the walking track into Henderson Creek valley.
The Won Wondah Falls branch leaves to the right. Its lookout is about 30 m along, where overhanging plants partly screen the cascade; return to the main track. About 500 m farther is Henderson Falls, with water running down a mossy black rock wall. A large Mountain Ash stands near the second bridge, a useful landmark before turning back toward the next junction.
Return to the junction and follow the signs to The Canyon. The track climbs some height, crosses a small creek and enters a narrow rocky cleft. Sheer walls rise about 10 m, with moss-covered boulders underfoot. The passage is uneven and involves scrambling over or around rocks, so slow down and watch each step. After passing through, you can look down on the cleft from above.
The walking eases for about 2 km on the way to Phantom Falls. From the falls, the track descends roughly 1.5 km toward Allenvale Mill Car Park beside the St George River. Without a shuttle, continue about 2 km along the Allenvale Road and Garvey Track corridor to close the loop at Sheoak.
The route combines creekside dirt paths, several crossings, the rocky Canyon passage and a final road walk. The canyon is the technical section; distance and muddy footing account for most of the effort elsewhere. Hiking sticks are recommended in the route notes, especially if you want extra support on uneven ground. Choose this for a half-day walk, not a smooth, easy waterfall stroll.
The trail moves through ferns, eucalypts and dense understorey, with creeks and falls breaking up the shaded forest. Won Wondah is partly hidden by foliage; Henderson spreads over a dark, mossy wall. The Canyon is a cleft rather than a broad lookout, and its steep rock faces make the scale of the passage.
Pied Currawongs, New Holland Honeyeaters and White-throated Treecreepers are among the birds heard or recorded along the route. Listen for them, but treat sightings as a possibility rather than a promise. The Mountain Ash near the second bridge is the clearest named tree landmark on the walk.
Park at Sheoak Picnic Area on Garvey Track and begin beside the information board. The picnic area has toilets, tables, gas barbecues and trail information. No food vendor or drinking-water source was identified on the route. For a shuttle, leave a second car at Allenvale Mill Car Park beside the camping area; otherwise budget for the road return.
A shorter official walk covers the Won Wondah and Henderson Falls section for 1.8 km one way and can continue toward The Canyon. It leaves out Phantom Falls and the full return circuit, so it is a different commitment.
